What is the difference between SKINVIVE™ by JUVÉDERM® and water injection?

The biggest improvement is the short duration. Existing aqua injections provide moisture and glow quickly but are absorbed rapidly, so the maintenance period is short and frequent repeat treatments were a burden. SKINVIVE™ by JUVÉDERM® is designed with cross-linking technology to slow down degradation and extend the interval between treatments.

Additionally, SKINVIVE™ by JUVÉDERM® uses a microdroplet technique that injects small amounts of gel at regular intervals and shallow depth, and contains lidocaine to help reduce pain and discomfort during the procedure.

The main purpose of SKINVIVE™ by JUVÉDERM® is to improve skin texture smoothness and increase hydration. Hyaluronic acid attracts and retains moisture in the dermis, adding natural volume and moisture to the skin, which can make the skin texture appear smoother. However, this is a concept of improving skin condition, and it differs from procedures that directly fill and remove deep wrinkles or scars.

For deep wrinkles or depressed scars, it is often difficult to expect sufficient improvement with SKINVIVE™ by JUVÉDERM® alone. In such cases, a combined approach that includes procedures that induce collagen production or other treatments such as dermal fillers may be effective. In consultations, some patients come expecting that SKINVIVE™ by JUVÉDERM® alone will also improve scars, but if scars or deep wrinkles are the main concern, it is more realistic to approach with combination therapy from the start.

Since the injection method is similar, the sensation during the procedure is generally similar to that of aqua injections. Because it is an injection procedure, there may be a stinging sensation during the multiple injections, but SKINVIVE™ by JUVÉDERM® contains lidocaine, which helps relieve pain. Pain varies depending on individual sensitivity and the area treated.

Immediately after the procedure, the injection sites may temporarily show slight raised bumps, known as the "embossing phenomenon." This is a reaction that can occur when hyaluronic acid is injected into the skin, and it usually subsides as it is absorbed over time. However, since SKINVIVE™ by JUVÉDERM® is based on a microdroplet technique that injects small amounts evenly into the dermis, excessive embossing that persists is not desirable. The degree of embossing and recovery speed may vary depending on individual skin condition and the treatment method, so it is advisable to receive thorough post-procedure instructions and monitor the progress.

If you are trying a skin booster for the first time, it is advisable to choose based on the expected effects and your preference for treatment intervals. If you prioritize a moist, hydrated feel and natural glow on the skin and do not mind repeated treatments, existing aqua injections can be a good choice. If you want to extend the interval between treatments and maintain the improvement in skin texture and hydration for a relatively longer time, you may consider the longer-lasting SKINVIVE™ by JUVÉDERM®.
