Lifting Ultherapy PRIME®

How Many Days Does Swelling and Pain Last After Ultherapy PRIME®?

After Ultherapy PRIME®, swelling is most noticeable at 2–3 days and mostly subsides within 1 week, and tenderness (pain when pressed) naturally disappears within 1–2 weeks.

How Long Does Swelling Last After the Procedure?

After Ultherapy (Ultherapy PRIME®) procedure, swelling is generally most noticeable at 2–3 days and mostly subsides naturally within 1 week. How many days swelling lasts is a common question during consultations. This is because the ultrasound energy creates thermal coagulation points in the deep skin layer (SMAS layer), causing a temporary tissue reaction, which is a natural sign that the skin has begun recovery and collagen regeneration.

The degree of swelling varies depending on the treatment area, number of shots delivered, and individual skin thickness and circulation. Areas with thin skin such as the eye area or jawline may feel relatively more swelling, and in many cases there is only subtle puffiness that is difficult for others to notice.

The typical progression by time period is summarized as follows.

PeriodGeneral condition
Immediately after procedure – Day 1Heat sensation, redness, mild swelling
2–3 daysPeriod when swelling is most noticeable
Around 1 weekMost swelling subsides
1–2 weeksTenderness when pressed gradually disappears

How Long Does Tenderness to Touch Last After Ultherapy PRIME®?

Tenderness (pain when pressed) is known to generally last about 1–2 weeks and then gradually disappear. This is a symptom that appears during the recovery process around the thermal coagulation points created in the deep skin layer. In most cases, it is not felt at rest but only when pressed during cleansing or massage.

In some individuals, tenderness around the jawbone or cheekbone area may last about 3–4 weeks, but if it gradually fades over time, it is part of the natural recovery process. However, if the pain worsens, swelling increases, or sensory abnormalities persist, it is safe to contact the clinic where the procedure was performed.

Does It Interfere with Daily Life?

Ultherapy PRIME® is a procedure that minimizes damage to the skin surface without needles or incisions, so most daily activities are possible from the day of the procedure. One of the advantages of HIFU Lifting is that there are no visible wounds or scabs, so there are no major restrictions on your schedule such as going to work or appointments.

However, for a few days after the procedure, the deep layers of the skin are still recovering, so it is recommended to avoid activities that significantly raise heat and blood flow, such as saunas, steam rooms, excessive drinking, and intense exercise, for about 1 week. Since results vary by individual, if you have an important event, it is advisable to schedule the procedure at least 1 to 2 weeks in advance.

How Can I Reduce Swelling Faster After Ultherapy PRIME®?

The basic principles for reducing swelling are a low-salt diet, adequate hydration, abstaining from alcohol, and keeping your head slightly higher than your heart while sleeping. Since salt and alcohol can increase fluid retention and prolong swelling, it is helpful to especially limit them for 2 to 3 days after the procedure.

Light cold compresses may help on the day of the procedure when there is a feeling of heat, but excessively strong warm compresses or high-temperature saunas can irritate the recovering skin, so it is advisable to avoid them in the early stage. Massaging the face vigorously can also stimulate tender areas, so if you are concerned about swelling, it is safer to follow the soothing care instructions provided by the dermatology clinic where you received the procedure rather than managing it on your own.

When Can I Wear Makeup or Wash My Face After Ultherapy PRIME®?

Washing your face and applying basic skincare are possible from the day of the procedure for most people. Since Ultherapy PRIME® does not damage the skin surface, you can gently wash with lukewarm water and immediately continue basic care such as applying moisturizer and sunscreen.

However, on the day of the procedure, avoid washing with hot water or using scrubs or exfoliants, and it is fine to start light color makeup in the evening of the same day or the next day depending on your skin condition. While redness or a feeling of heat remains, focus on soothing and moisturizing care. For a specific care schedule tailored to your individual recovery speed, we recommend consulting with a dermatologist after the procedure.
