Lifting Ultherapy PRIME®

What is Ultherapy PRIME®?

Ultherapy PRIME® is a lifting procedure that focuses ultrasound on the deep SMAS layer to create micro-thermal coagulation points at about 60-70°C, inducing collagen regeneration. The procedure time is approximately 30-40 minutes for the full face.

How Does Ultherapy PRIME® Stimulate the SMAS Layer?

Ultherapy PRIME® uses micro-focused ultrasound (MFU-V) to deliver energy to a focal point in the deep tissue layers rather than the skin surface, stimulating the SMAS layer. When the ultrasound energy converges at a single point, the temperature at that spot rises locally, creating micro-thermal coagulation points (small areas of thermal stimulation). This stimulation triggers the body’s collagen regeneration process.

At this time, the temperature reached at the focal point is generally about 60-70°C. In this temperature range, existing collagen fibers contract, and then new collagen and elastic fibers are rearranged. An important feature is that it passes over the skin surface (epidermis) without touching it, acting selectively only on the deep layers, allowing treatment of deep layers without incisions.

Another feature of Ultherapy PRIME® is that it delivers energy while checking the layer structure of the treatment area in real time using ultrasound imaging (Visualization). Because you can see what tissue is at what depth while aiming, it helps concentrate stimulation on the desired layer.

What Is Different from the Original Ultherapy PRIME®?

Ultherapy PRIME® is a next-generation platform introduced by Merz Aesthetics in the second half of 2024, with key improvements in imaging screen and procedure convenience. The monitor is about 35% larger and the ultrasound imaging area is wider, allowing clearer visualization of the layer structure of the treatment area, and the processing speed is faster, shortening the procedure time.

The precision of energy delivery and aiming has been improved, making it better for treating delicate areas such as the eye area, neck, and décolletage, and improvements have also been made in energy delivery methods to reduce pain. However, the basic principle of 'stimulating collagen to lift' has not changed; it can be understood as an upgrade within the same HIFU Lifting category.

What Concerns Does It Address Effectively?

Ultherapy PRIME® is a procedure that helps with sagging and blurred contours caused by decreased skin elasticity. Typical targets include a blurred jawline (V-line), sagging cheeks, drooping eyebrows making the eyes look heavy, and fine lines and laxity on the neck. In consultations, many people have concerns about both the jawline and cheek sagging together.

Since it stimulates collagen in the deep layers of the skin, it is not a procedure that directly erases fine lines on the surface, but rather focuses on firming sagging tissue from the inside. However, the degree of improvement varies by individual, and if sagging is very severe, combining with other methods or a plan through consultation may be necessary.

How Long Does an Ultherapy PRIME® Session Take?

The procedure time varies by area and scope, but for the full face it is known to be approximately 30-40 minutes. PRIME® is noted for its improved processing speed, which shortens the procedure time compared to before.

However, the actual time depends on the treatment area (face, neck, partial), number of shots, application of numbing cream and waiting time, etc. For an accurate estimate, it is accurate to receive guidance after checking your skin condition and treatment scope.

Who Is a Particularly Good Candidate?

Ultherapy PRIME® is a procedure well-suited for those who want to manage mild to moderate skin sagging without incisions. It is especially considered for people in their late 30s to 50s who find surgery burdensome but want to manage decreased elasticity and contour changes, and for those who cannot afford a long downtime.

Conversely, if skin sagging is very severe or there are significant fat or structural changes, ultrasound lifting alone may not achieve the desired results, so combining with other procedures or a different approach may be more suitable. Also, the procedure may be limited during pregnancy or if there is infection or injury in the treatment area, so it is recommended to consult with a dermatologist to determine if it is right for you.
