Does frequent treatment damage the skin?

Treatments performed with appropriate energy levels and intervals carry a low risk of skin damage. Ultrasound and RF Lifting are generally spaced 6 months to 1 year or more apart; more frequent repetition may increase the risk of fat atrophy and cumulative thermal burden.

Can Frequent Lifting Treatments Cause Hollow Cheeks?

When appropriate energy and intervals are maintained, lifting does not typically melt cheek fat and cause hollowing. However, repeated treatments at short intervals or excessive energy are known to increase the risk of fat atrophy. Ultrasound and RF Lifting target the layer responsible for elasticity, not the fat layer itself, and problems mostly arise from incorrect depth settings, excessive overlapping on the same area, or short treatment intervals.

In particular, individuals with naturally low facial fat or those who have experienced rapid weight loss have a relatively higher risk of hollowing in the cheeks and temples, so energy levels and treatment areas should be designed more conservatively. Conversely, those with sufficient fat have much less concern with the same treatment.

Therefore, for lifting, "precision" is more important than "frequency." At Heal House, we use ultrasound imaging with Ultherapy PRIME® to visualize skin layers during treatment, and adjust the interval and intensity individually based on facial fat volume.

Does Repeated Thread Lifting Thicken the Tissue?

Collagen formation around the threads, making the tissue somewhat firmer, is part of the mechanism of thread lifting and is a normal response. As the dissolving threads are absorbed, fibrosis (collagen formation) occurs around them, which contributes to lifting and maintaining elasticity. In other words, it is true that "tissue changes," but this does not necessarily mean damage.

However, concerns have been raised that excessive repetition at short intervals can lead to cumulative tissue reactions. Therefore, it is advisable to decide on repeat treatments only after checking the absorption progress of previous threads and the condition of the tissue. Whether to repeat and the interval should be based on an individual assessment of tissue condition rather than a one-size-fits-all standard.

If collagen formation is the goal, there are alternatives to threads. Treatments such as JUVGEN, which uses CO₂ and hyaluronic acid to stimulate autologous collagen production, and Sculptra, a poly-L-lactic acid injectable that induces collagen, are also available. During a consultation, please compare methods suitable for your tissue condition.

Can Repeated Dermal Filler Use Lead to Sagging?

There is insufficient evidence that repeating appropriate amounts of filler alone stretches the skin and causes sagging; once the filler is absorbed, the skin generally recovers its original elasticity. The concern that "filler stretches the skin and causes sagging" is common, but with typical volumes, it is close to an exaggerated worry.

However, there are exceptions. Repeatedly filling one area with excessive volume can burden the skin and tissue, potentially affecting laxity, and the risk increases in skin with already significantly reduced elasticity. What matters in repeated filler treatments is not the number of sessions but the restraint of injecting "only as much as needed" each time.

If your concerns are fine lines or skin hydration rather than volume, consider switching to a Skin Booster such as SKINVIVE™ by JUVÉDERM® or REJURAN® instead of filler. Before repeating treatments, please have a consultation to determine whether your face currently needs volume or elasticity.

Is There No Risk of Skin Damage If the Recommended Interval Is Followed?

Following appropriate intervals significantly lowers the risk of damage, but no treatment can be said to have "no" risk. Even with the same interval, responses vary depending on skin thickness, fat volume, and recovery ability, and factors such as condition, season, and lifestyle also play a role. The interval is a basic condition for safety, not a sufficient condition.

The generally known intervals for each treatment group are as follows, and actual intervals are adjusted based on diagnosis.

Treatment GroupGenerally Known IntervalConcerns When Excessive
Ultrasound & RF Lifting6 months to 1 year or moreFat atrophy, cumulative thermal burden
HA FillerTop up after checking how much has absorbedUnnaturalness from overfilling
Skin BoosterEvery few weeks; maintenance after the required sessionsFrequent injection irritation
Laser Toning & PigmentSeveral weeks apartHyperpigmentation from overstimulation of pigment cells

What is important is not only "keeping" the interval but also rechecking the skin condition before each treatment. Only when the response to the previous treatment is recorded and reflected in the intensity of the next treatment does repeated treatment become safe.

How Can You Manage the Habit of Getting Repeated Treatments?

Setting a goal first and establishing a maintenance plan tailored to that goal is the most reliable way to control treatment frequency. With a vague standard of "wanting to improve more," treatments tend to continue endlessly, but setting a specific goal and maintenance interval, such as "improve sagging jawline and then maintain once a year," can filter out unnecessary additional treatments.

It is also important not to decide on additional treatments immediately out of dissatisfaction right after a procedure. Lifting and collagen treatments show results over several months, so adding more treatments before evaluating the outcome can lead to over-treatment. It is recommended to wait for the effect to manifest and then reassess.

The best approach is to have your treatment history managed at one clinic. Having a regular doctor who knows your cumulative energy levels, treatment intervals and skin changes, and who can tell you, "It would be better to take a break this time," is the most realistic safeguard against over-treatment. If you have several treatments planned, we recommend starting with a consultation to review your plan as a whole.
