Skin Booster Thermage® FLX REJURAN®

Which treatment is suitable for fine lines around the eyes?

For expression lines that appear when you smile, botulinum toxin type A is suitable; for fine lines and loss of elasticity that remain even at rest, eye-area lifting such as Thermage® FLX for the eyes is appropriate; and for fine lines caused by skin texture and dryness, a Skin Booster is suitable. The basic strategy is to divide and combine treatments according to the nature of the wrinkles.

What Kind of Wrinkles Does Botulinum Toxin Type A Treat Around the Eyes?

Botulinum toxin type A for the eyes is the most effective treatment for expression lines (dynamic wrinkles) that appear like crow's feet at the outer corners of the eyes when you smile or squint. Botulinum toxin prevents excessive contraction of the orbicularis oculi muscle, softening the folds that form on the skin when you make expressions.

The effect usually appears within a few days to one week after the procedure and generally lasts about 3 to 5 months, requiring periodic repeat treatments for maintenance. However, for static fine lines that remain etched even when you are at rest, regardless of expression, muscle relaxation alone has limitations in improvement, so treatments that address the skin's own elasticity and collagen are considered together.

Can an Eye-Area Lifting Treatment Like Thermage® FLX Help?

Yes, for static fine lines caused by loss of skin elasticity and drooping eyelids, eye-area lifting such as Thermage® FLX for the eyes can be helpful. Thermage® FLX for the eyes is a procedure performed with a dedicated tip for the eyes on the Thermage® FLX device, delivering radiofrequency (RF) energy to the dermal layer using a tip designed for the thin skin of the eyelids and eye area.

Collagen that receives thermal stimulation undergoes immediate contraction and then a regeneration process over several months. Improvement in elasticity generally appears gradually over 2 to 6 months, and the effect is known to last about 1 year. Improvement can be expected for early sagging where the upper eyelids appear heavy, under-eye fine lines, and deterioration of skin texture around the eyes where makeup settles into lines. The procedure does not interfere with daily life.

Can Skin Booster Help With Fine Lines Around the Eyes?

It is helpful. For fine lines caused by thinning and drying of the skin, a Skin Booster that aids skin regeneration and hydration can be a management option. REJURAN® I, which contains PN derived from salmon DNA, is widely used for regeneration management in thin areas like the eye area, and is typically performed in 3 sessions at 4-week intervals to promote improvement in skin texture and elasticity.

If the goal is to improve hydration and fine texture, gentle hyaluronic acid-based boosters such as SKINVIVE™ by JUVÉDERM® or BELOTERO® Revive are also options. Re2O® and Juvélook Eye, which help with eye-area elasticity and fine lines, can also be helpful for fine, crinkly lines around the eyes.

A Skin Booster is closer to a management concept that improves the skin's basic condition to make fine lines less likely to form and less visible, rather than a procedure that immediately eliminates wrinkles. Therefore, its role does not overlap with botulinum toxin type A or Thermage® FLX for the eyes, and they are complementary.

Are Eye-Area Treatments More Painful?

The eye area has thin skin and a dense concentration of sensory nerves, so it tends to feel procedure stimulation more sensitively than other areas. However, the degree of pain varies depending on the type of procedure and also varies greatly between individuals.

Most procedures are performed after applying anesthetic cream. Thermage® FLX and Eye Virtue RF are designed with integrated cooling to ease the burden of heat stimulation, so the pain is not as severe as you might think.

If needle stimulation is a concern, alternatives such as SkinJet or CureJet, which use needle-free special equipment to penetrate medication, can be considered.

How Are Multiple Procedures Combined?

In consultations, the eye area often has both expression lines and static fine lines together, so the basic strategy is to divide and combine treatments according to the nature of the wrinkles. By approaching expression lines with botulinum toxin type A, loss of elasticity with Thermage® FLX for the eyes or lasers such as Virtue RF or ResurFX™, and skin texture and hydration with a Skin Booster, the advantages of each procedure are added without overlap.

The intervals and order between procedures vary depending on your skin condition, and it is not necessary to have all procedures at once. We recommend that you first consult with a board-certified dermatologist to determine which type of wrinkles is predominant around your eyes, then set priorities and proceed step by step.
