Depigmentation Therapy: Evening Out Skin Tone by Removing Remaining Pigment

Depigmentation therapy is a treatment considered only for widespread vitiligo where the condition has progressed to cover 60–80% or more of the body surface. While previous treatments aim to match the white patches to the surrounding skin color, depigmentation therapy takes the opposite approach of removing the remaining normal pigment to even out the skin tone. This treatment has a narrow target and requires careful judgment.

Laser Depigmentation: Gradually Reducing Pigment in Stages

Q-switched ruby, alexandrite, and Nd:YAG lasers are commonly used to selectively destroy melanocytes. They can treat large areas at once and are fast-acting, but the procedure may cause pain, bruising, or scabbing, requiring a recovery period.

Precautions and Side Effects of Depigmentation Therapy

  • Scabs or blisters may form on the treated area, requiring a care period of about two weeks. During this time, some discomfort in daily life may occur.

  • Temporary redness or increased skin sensitivity may appear on the treated area.

  • Since large areas are treated over multiple sessions, the plan is adjusted based on progress.
