The causative layer itself is different: skin and muscle.
- Horizontal neck wrinkles: They are caused by repeated skin folding, photoaging, and dryness, which lead to collagen loss. They are often present from childhood like tree rings, and habits such as looking down at a smartphone can deepen them even at a young age.
- Vertical neck wrinkles: The main cause is tension and aging of the platysma muscle, which covers the entire neck from under the chin to the collarbone. Typically after middle age, as the muscle loses elasticity, it bulges out like vertical bands when the neck is tensed.
