This study began with the aim of understanding hand vitiligo, which is challenging to treat, more accurately. Although it has been treated as a single category of "vitiligo on the hands," the appearances encountered in the clinic have varied from patient to patient.

The researchers examined the lesion morphology and distribution in 230 hand vitiligo patients and divided the patient groups showing similar characteristics into three types. Because the hands have a lot of movement and are located at the extremities of the body, treatment response may be more limited compared to other areas. Even on the same hand, where the lesion is located and what shape it takes can differ, so classifying these differences can help in establishing an appropriate treatment plan for each patient.

Even on the same body part, if the shape of the lesion is different, the approach must also differ. This award was meaningful in that it allowed us to pursue research questions that arose in the clinic and share the results with fellow medical professionals.
