Chilean Dermatologist Observes Clinical Practice

by Heal House

A clinical observation visit focused on pigment treatment and exchange of clinical opinions, experiencing the treatment process of a Korean dermatology clinic by receiving a procedure directly.

Two dermatologists from Chile, along with their companions, visited Heal House Gangnam Branch. The visit was arranged through the local partner of a laser device manufacturer. We initially thought they had simply stopped by during their travels in Korea, but it turned out they came specifically to see how melasma and pigmentation are treated in Korea, making the visit all the more meaningful.

Chile is a country with strong sunlight. The two visiting dermatologists were middle-aged women who said they enjoy outdoor activities and exercise. Their skin condition itself was not very different from that of Korean patients, but perhaps due to long-term UV exposure, their pigmentation was dark and their skin appeared tired.

In particular, the lead physician in her 50s had melasma that had spread quite extensively. She shared her concern that when the melasma was not severe, she had received a single session of a strong laser with significant downtime just to test the equipment, but afterward the melasma actually became darker, and since then, no treatment had produced any response. To address this concern, Dr. Hanmi Jung, who has extensive experience in pigment treatments such as melasma, performed a procedure.

First, it was explained that in Korea, pigment treatment does not rely solely on a single laser. Along with pigment lasers, radiofrequency treatments or skin-calming skincare are combined to change the environment in which the skin exists, which helps lighten melasma as well. The procedure that day concluded with the explanation that a program of about 8 weeks typically not only clears pigmentation but also restores skin texture and tone.

Melasma is a condition that becomes more difficult to treat the more you try to achieve results in a single session. Rather than aiming for dramatic changes with high intensity, it was a time to confirm through each other's clinical experience that consistently staying within the skin's tolerance is ultimately the faster path. While treatment approaches differ from country to country, the concern for how to protect the patient's skin seems to be universal. Heal House will continue to exchange clinical experiences with Dermatologists from abroad and share the treatment standards we have accumulated with a wider audience.
