Dr. Jung Min Bae was invited as a representative speaker for Korea at the international conference of the Vitiligo International Patient Organization Committee (VIPOC) and gave a lecture. This is an event organized by a patient organization headquartered in Paris.
Vitiligo manifests as a change in skin color, but the difficulties patients face do not stop at the skin. Due to the stares and misconceptions of those around them, they may feel withdrawn in interpersonal relationships or social life, and may carry a heavy emotional burden for a long time.
Although this conference was held online due to COVID-19, patient groups and dermatologists from around the world gathered together. There was a long discussion on how to reduce the social stigma surrounding vitiligo and how to improve patients' quality of life. Director Bae shared the realities faced by domestic patients and the experiences she has had in the clinic, and spoke about the emotional and social support that should be considered alongside treatment.
In the clinic, lightening the white patches; outside the clinic, changing the way those patches are perceived. Vitiligo is a condition that requires both approaches to go hand in hand.
