For vitiligo excimer laser, is a regimen with breaks as effective as weekly treatment?
Comparison of cyclic and continuous 308-nm excimer laser treatments for vitiligo: A randomized controlled noninferiority trial

In short
This clinical trial examined whether an 'intermittent' regimen of excimer laser (with breaks) is not significantly inferior to a 'continuous' regimen (without breaks).
Vitiligo excimer laser treatment requires consistent visits to the clinic over several months. This demands considerable time and cost from patients. So this question naturally arose: if the effect is similar even with breaks in between, could the burden be reduced? I participated as a co-investigator in a clinical trial that examined this question. The regimen with periodic breaks was directly compared with the regimen of weekly continuous treatment.
Q1 What is the difference between the 'cyclic' and 'continuous' regimens, and why were they compared?
The two regimens differ only in the 'schedule' of laser application; the treatment itself is the same 308 nm excimer laser. The continuous regimen provides treatment every week without skipping. The cyclic regimen repeats a pattern of treatment for a certain period, followed by a break, then resuming. This study was not intended to confirm that the new regimen is 'better' than the existing one. It was a trial to confirm that it is 'not substantially inferior.' If the effects are similar, it provides a basis for choosing the option that imposes less burden on the patient. Which regimen each patient received was determined randomly to prevent bias in the results. Such an approach helps in flexibly tailoring the treatment schedule to the patient's lifestyle.
Closing remarks
What stands out is that this study considered not only the 'effectiveness' of treatment but also the actual 'burden' that patients bear. If a regimen with breaks is sufficiently useful, it can offer a more practical treatment option for busy patients or those who travel from afar. Although I did not lead this study, it was meaningful to contribute to verifying such a question together.
