Skin Booster JUVELOOK Re2O®

Can Boosters Also Cause Nodules (Lumps)?

Skin Boosters can rarely cause nodules (lumps). In particular, the injection technique for collagen boosters is important, and most cases improve with proper management.

Which Boosters Carry a Risk of Nodules?

Relatively more caution regarding nodules is needed for regenerative boosters that induce collagen production. Types that stimulate a collagen response in the tissue, such as JUVELOOK (PDLLA+HA) and Re2O® (hADM human-derived collagen), have the potential to clump locally if the material does not spread evenly. In contrast, HA-based types focused on hydration (SKINVIVE™ by JUVÉDERM®, BELOTERO® Revive) are injected in small amounts evenly into the superficial layer, so the burden of nodules is relatively lower.

In consultations, we often receive the question, "Can boosters also clump?" and the tendency differs by type. Below is a table summarizing the characteristics of each type from the perspective of nodules, for reference.

CategoryRepresentative BoosterGeneral Characteristics from a Nodule Perspective
Hydration (HA)SKINVIVE™ by JUVÉDERM®, BELOTERO® ReviveSuperficial distribution, relatively low nodule burden
Regenerative (PN)REJURAN®High biocompatibility, relatively low risk
Collagen-InducingJUVELOOK, Re2O®Dispersion and depth management are especially important

Why Do Nodules Form After Booster Treatments?

Nodules can occur when the injected material clumps in one area or is injected excessively at an inappropriate depth. In particular, collagen-inducing particles such as PDLLA may clump locally and form nodules if dilution is insufficient or the material is not evenly dispersed.

Individual tissue response is also an important factor. Even with the same product and the same procedure, there are individual differences in inflammation or fibrotic reactions, so in rare cases, delayed nodules may be felt.

In other words, it is accurate to understand that nodules are not a problem specific to a particular product, but occur due to a combination of the product's characteristics, the injection technique, and the individual's tissue response.

How Can Booster Nodules Be Prevented?

The key to prevention is proper dilution, even dispersion, and accurate injection depth. In particular, for particulate collagen boosters, it is important to dilute and mix them sufficiently according to the manufacturer's recommended method, and then inject them in small amounts evenly into the appropriate layer. Some products recommend gentle massage after the procedure to ensure even distribution.

After the procedure, it helps to follow the care instructions provided by your dermatologist. Avoid pressing on the injection site excessively or rubbing it vigorously, and refrain from excessive heat or stimulation such as saunas and steam rooms.

Above all, the most important factor in preventing nodules is to select the appropriate product and volume for your skin condition through thorough consultation, and to apply the correct injection technique.

What Should You Do If a Nodule Develops After a Booster Treatment?

If you feel a nodule, do not vigorously rub or squeeze it yourself; first contact the clinic. In most cases, management involves monitoring the progress, gentle massage, and if necessary, local treatment. For HA-based types, dissolving enzyme (hyaluronidase) may be considered depending on the situation.

Stimulating the area on your own or leaving it unattended for a long time may worsen the condition. If redness, pain, or a feeling of heat develops, or if the nodule increases in size, it is safe to consult your dermatologist to check for a possible inflammatory reaction.

Do Booster Nodules Go Away on Their Own?

Nodules may naturally improve over time in some cases, but it is difficult to assert that all will disappear on their own. Mild clumping may gradually decrease over weeks to months as the skin tissue adapts and the injected material settles. However, some nodules may persist for a long time or become firm, so additional management may be necessary depending on the condition.

How long a nodule lasts varies greatly depending on the product used, the cause, and the individual's tissue response. Therefore, if the nodule persists for a long time or causes discomfort, it is better to consult your dermatologist to determine an appropriate management approach rather than simply waiting.
