When Is It Okay to Use a Sauna, Exercise, or Drink Alcohol After a Procedure?

It is generally safe to avoid saunas, strenuous exercise, and alcohol for at least 2–3 days after most procedures, and to avoid heat stimulation for about 1 week.

How Many Days After a Procedure Should You Avoid Saunas and Steam Baths?

It is generally recommended to avoid saunas and steam rooms for at least 2–3 days after a procedure, or around 1 week for heat-based treatments. This is because the high temperature of a sauna can dilate blood vessels in the treated area, worsening swelling and redness, and can add extra irritation to the recovering skin barrier.

In particular, if the procedure leaves micro-wounds on the skin, such as with laser or injection treatments, a hot, humid environment can also increase the risk of bacterial infection. Even after treatments that deliver heat to the dermis or fascial (SMAS) layer, such as Thermage® FLX or Ultherapy PRIME®, applying strong heat from the outside again can cause swelling to persist longer.

For the same reason, it is advisable to avoid bathing, hot springs, and steam towels in the early period. Most patients can wash their face and shower with lukewarm water on the day of or the day after the procedure, so please follow the specific timing guidance provided for your treatment type.

When Can You Resume Strenuous Exercise?

It is generally recommended to resume strenuous exercise 24–48 hours after a procedure. During exercise, heart rate and blood flow increase, which can worsen swelling and bruising in the treated area, and sweat coming into contact with micro-wounds can increase irritation and infection risk.

For injection treatments such as dermal filler or botulinum toxin, there is also a possibility that a sudden increase in blood flow right after the procedure could cause the medication to spread beyond the intended area, so it is safe to rest for at least one day. Light activities such as walking are generally fine from the day of the procedure.

Why Should You Avoid Alcohol?

The reason to avoid alcohol is that it dilates blood vessels and affects platelet function, increasing the risk of bruising, swelling, and bleeding. If you drink alcohol while micro-bleeding in the treated area has not yet stabilized, bruising may become more extensive or recovery may be delayed.

Additionally, alcohol dehydrates the body, making the skin dry, and reduces sleep quality, which can interfere with skin regeneration.

In general, it is recommended to abstain from alcohol for at least 24 hours after injection treatments, and until any bruising has subsided if bruising is present. It is also advisable to avoid alcohol the day before a procedure for the same reasons.

Do Precautions Vary by Procedure?

Yes, the precaution period varies depending on the degree of invasiveness and the mechanism of action of the procedure. The following approximate guidelines can be established based on whether there are surface wounds, the depth of heat delivery, and whether injections are involved.

Treatment typeSauna / Steam RoomStrenuous ExerciseAlcohol
Botulinum Toxin2–3 days24 hours24 hours
HA Filler and Other Injection Treatments3 days to 1 week24–48 hours2–3 days
Radiofrequency or HIFU LiftingAround 1 week24–48 hours2–3 days
Laser (with Surface Irritation)1–2 weeks2–3 daysUntil bruising and scabs heal

The above periods are general guidelines and may vary depending on the intensity of the procedure and individual recovery. If you received an aftercare instruction sheet on the day of the procedure, please follow those guidelines first.

What Problems Can Occur If You Don’t Follow the Guidelines?

Not following the precautions can lead to worsened swelling and bruising, delayed recovery, and issues such as infection or pigmentation.

If scabs or redness remain after a laser procedure and heat and sweat stimulation from saunas or exercise are repeated, post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation can occur, potentially extending recovery by several weeks or more.

Not following the precautions for a day or two does not necessarily cause problems, but if pain, heat, or swelling suddenly worsens, do not wait and self-judge—please contact the medical institution where you received the procedure. Because the necessary care varies depending on your individual skin condition, it is advisable to consult with a dermatologist before and after the procedure to determine the appropriate precaution period for you.
