The three procedures are distinguished by the type of energy used and the depth of heating in the skin. Thermage® FLX uses monopolar radiofrequency (RF) energy for broad volumetric heating of the dermis and subcutaneous tissue. Ultherapy PRIME® uses micro-focused ultrasound (MFU) focused to a single point to create coagulation points in the deep SMAS layer. Soprano Titanium simultaneously delivers three wavelengths (755, 810, and 1064 nm) to transfer heat layer by layer from below the epidermis to the dermis.
| Category | Thermage® FLX | Ultherapy PRIME® | Soprano Titanium |
|---|---|---|---|
| Energy | Monopolar radiofrequency (RF) | Micro-focused ultrasound | 3-wavelength laser |
| Primary depth of action | Dermis to subcutaneous tissue | Down to the SMAS layer | Lower epidermis to dermis |
| Heat delivery method | Volumetric heating in a planar pattern | Formation of coagulation points | Broad, low-temperature repetitive heating |
All three procedures share the same ultimate goal of collagen remodeling through thermal stimulation. However, because the depth and method of heat generation differ, even among so-called “lifting” treatments, the areas improved and the sensation experienced are different.
